Glyndyfrdwy Station

Photo – Bob Hibbert

Historically renowned for its association with Owain Glyndwr. It was here at his Manor of Glyndyfrdwy that Owain (Baron of Glyndyfrdwy) proclaimed himself “Prince of Wales” on 16th September 1400 so beginning his 14-year rebellion against English Rule. Today in the Owain Glyndwr Memorial Hall can be seen artefacts associated with him.

At this delightful rural Station why not alight a while to enjoy the tranquil picnic areas that the station offers, take a stroll down to the nearby river Dee or around the village. The village playing field & play area adjoining the Station is also very popular with young families.

A Tea Room at the Station is also open on all timetabled Gala Event Days where you will receive a friendly welcome.

Pronounced GLYN – DUVERD – WEE. The name simply means Valley of the Dee.

There is a small village here with no shops. The station is usually manned during special events only but there has to be a signalman because of the manually operated level crossing gates. No flashing lights here! The main reason for alighting here would be to go walking. There are superb walks in various directions. A suggestion would be to walk on to the next station, Carrog. You can go along the lane which is not too busy. But a more spectacular option would be to go uphill and walk across the tops to Carrog. You would see the River Dee and railway line stretching out below you. If you are taking this option it would be a good idea to have OS Explorer map 255 “Llangollen and Berwyn” with you.

If you are taking either walk go to the end of the “down”* platform, cross the level crossing when the road gates are open, walk down to a T junction and go left.

If you’re not so much of a walker you could visit the Berwyn Arms, a hostelry by the A5, serving food. From the “down”* platform turn right on to the lane and walk up to the A5 and turn right again. The pub is on the right, after another short walk.

*The “down” platform is the one the train stops at on its journey from Llangollen to Corwen.
