Return to Llangollen Railway – Frequently Asked Questions

Following COVID-19 restrictions and Welsh Government guidance, please be aware of the changes to our normal operational procedures at this time. Please make sure that you read the information below before visiting Llangollen Railway.

Llangollen Railway will only be accessible to people who have pre booked tickets

Due to the limited size of the Office we are restricting the number of visitors.  For any enquiries, in the first instance, please contact info@llangollen-railway.co.uk or telephone 01978 860979.  The majority of queries can be dealt with over the telephone or via email.

Is the Railway open?

The Railway will open on Saturday 1st August. We ask that all passengers, including members, to pre-book their visit online in advance. Our Booking Office will be open but due to restrictions in numbers we will not be able to guarantee a seat will be available to those who turn up on the day.

Our team have been busying preparing the railway to accommodate one-way flows around the platforms at Llangollen and Carrog where possible, please follow the signposts when you arrive.

We can accept contactless payments within the cafes and shop and social distancing measures have been put in place. Please note there will be no on-board catering facilities.

Why do I need to pre-book?

As part of our phased re-opening, and to ensure social distancing measures, we are offering a limited service. To help us monitor capacity, we are asking visitors to book tickets online in advance.  Limited numbers of tickets may be available to purchase on the day but this cannot be guaranteed.

Why are you only operating non-stop services?

As part of a phased reopening, we are offering pre-booked, non-stop services with limited capacity. The nonstop service will help to ensure the safety of passengers and volunteers. A mixture of steam hauled, diesel hauled and heritage railcar services will operate between Llangollen and Carrog return 7 days per week.

These services were carefully considered to ensure passengers can be socially-distanced on both the carriages and platforms. Additionally we are a registered charity run by volunteers, so we have had to manage our resource carefully.

The pandemic has impacted the railway and we have lost vital income from not being able to operate during the 2020 season. Please help us by purchasing a ticket to travel. Your support makes an enormous difference in keeping us running.
