TRAVEL BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The days when direct train services ran to Llangollen have long since gone, but ease of access is still possible using a mix of train and bus travel from centres in the North-West of England and the Midlands, as well as North Wales. There is also a good train service from London Euston, changing at either Birmingham or Crewe to Ruabon or Wrexham which provides access from southern England.

RUABON Station is unstaffed but is equipped with Customer Information Service screens which give real time details of train services from both platforms.

Only bus shelter type accommodation is provided on both platforms; the former station building is in private occupancy. Car parking facilities are provided.

Access from platform 1 – the down side to Chester – is via a footbridge – there is no disabled access to/from platform 1 and the disabled are advised to remain on the train to Wrexham General station and access the local buses from Wrexham’s King St bus station.

A bus stop and shelter is provided in Ruabon station forecourt in Station Road and is served by the route X94 Traws Cambria  from Chester/Wrexham to Barmouth(Abermaw) at two hourly intervals. It is limited stop to & from Llangollen and is provided by Arriva Cymru.

More information about train and bus services can be found at http://www.wrexham.gov.uk/english/travel/rail/ruabon.htm

Bus Timetables

The bus timetable can be obtained from Wrexham County Borough Council at the Enquiry Office, Kings St Bus Station, Wrexham or follow these links for appropriate timetables or telephone 01978 266 166

Note: there is no direct bus service to Shrewsbury from Llangollen or Ruabon but bus services do operate to Oswestry for onward connections; however they are time consuming options and cannot be recommended for those in a hurry to catch the steam train at Llangollen! Some people may recommend Chirk as a railhead for Llangollen but this is only provided you have a car for onward transport as there is no direct bus service – other than on a Sunday with route 5A.

It is emphasised that care must be taken to study the timetables for these bus services as, if you miss one, in parts of rural Wales there won’t be another one along in 5 minutes!

Engineering work on the railways may also take place on Sundays and information about the impact on train services should be obtained in advance of travel.
